Another episode so soon? You do spoil us. :)
ReplyDeleteThis has given me a lot to think about in regards to Legends. While I wasn't as negatively inclined towards it as some people I know, I still had a few issues with it. Overall, if you get over the visual style of each episode (a few which I'm not crazy about), then the actual stories are perfectly fine.
I'd give it like and 8/10 including the more recent information that made me less angry about the Human ruins in 'The Babysitter'. It all slots in pretty nicely now.
The Duel is definitely the best episode, for one very good reason: GIANT HUNTERS. It would be cool if other forms of Mgalekgolo appeared in the games or fiction since that's what the scarabs basically are, just giant hunter tanks. The actual duel between the Arbiter and Harka was very epic too since they were both deadly warriors that could kill the other in one hit, as they both did in the end.
Odd one out is brilliant too, cuz ya know... dinosaurs. D1N0S4UR5 R 1337. W007!
DeleteI wants giant hunters! I think it was the Forward Unto Dawn podcast where I heard Slightly Live talk about how awesome it would be to capitalise on the Maliabilty of the Lekgolo!
Would love to see some different forms!
And How could I forget W007! I didn't realise I needed research 1337 5P34K before I embarked on this show. A number of things are making me nostalgic for the old days, right now.
Not least of all the inclusion of a Rail Gun in Halo 4. That news inspired me to have a short session on Quake 3 Arena around a mates house a couple of weeks back.
1 R FR4G K1NG! G1B 5UM N0085! W007!
Alreet lads. Really enjoyed your perspective on Legends I watched it when it was first available on Xbox live and I wasn't over enamoured but that was before I read all the extended fiction so I shall definitely go back and watch it again given how much it seems to have enhanced your experience. Next project a discussion of the Halo: Evolutions audio books? those were pretty excellent and a nice doorway into the universe as a whole for those who have only played the games.
ReplyDeleteDragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are ace (so long as you skip the filler as with all anime)Dragon Ball GT however is what most folks would refer to as a steaming pile of turd. Check out DBZ tom it's a gateway drug to anime as a whole when your done there move on to Gibli I feel I can almost guarantee you will end up a fan of the art style if not the animation.
Love Gunslingers idea of facing off against bigger hunters cause lets face it those regular ones are pussies. I swear the elites are harder to kill than the hunters on Mythic difficulty.
Once again GZ on the Waypoint appearance boys can't think of anyone else that deserves it more. Oh and cheers for the link ----> (TeaBagOrDie folks) we have started a Halo community page and hopefully it will start developing a little more once we finish our retro game series.
Looking forward to the next episode already.
Elth
Thanks for the inclusion on your Halo community page! Excellent suggestion for covering the Audio version of Evolutions. I've heard nothing but good stuff about but have only experienced it in it's more traditional form.
DeleteWith regards to Dragonball, maybe I was only exposed to GT or a filler episode? I remember thinking "What is all the fuss about" and never going back.
Your bang on with the Gibli stuff though! That stuff is just beautiful.
I'm gonna do it, Dragon Ball Z here I come! And I'd never thought of the Ghibli stuff as anime, but I love those films so maybe there's hope for me yet!
DeleteAs with all Animes jumping into a random episode is always gonna leave you confused, best to start at the beggining. Dragon Ball is where it all starts but you can easily pick it up from the begging of Z they recently did a slimline version called DB Kai that reduced the 300 something episodes down to about 150 which cuts out alot of the crap and focusses on the action but I'd always recommend watching Z over that cause you miss some key scenes. Trigun is well worth a watch while your on. Vash is a legend. Anyway enough about Anime let's shoot some blue/red guys sometime soon lads. Any thoughts on your Machinima Tom?
DeleteLoving the podcast guys.
ReplyDeleteI think I will give Legends another go after listening to you talking about it since I was not overly impressed the first time around. I have to say it made a nice change hearing people say something positive about it for once.
Come to think of it it's just nice to hear people who genuinely love halo talk about it. I don't think any of my friends play the game anymore and I know they are not interested in the fiction so listening to you guys really makes a crappy day a lot better.
Plus you are fellow Eng...lishians? so bonus points there!
Keep up the awesome work, really looking forward to the next episode!
Rob
We tend to be pretty positive about most things, but like you say it comes from us loving the franchise and being passionate about all things Halo!
DeleteAnd it's great to hear from another English listener! Although the question I feel I must ask is... just how amusing are you?
Thanks Rob!
DeleteWe like to be positive! Halo is something we both feel lucky to have in our lives so the podcast is way to not only share our passion but also give a little thanks.
It was Tom that suggested we do a legends episode and I'm VERY glad he did. I probably would have never re-watched myself otherwise and would have had the same original unfavourable impression forever.
Thanks for listening and commenting! Always makes us feel good to get comments!
I'm sorry Tom but I am unable to answer that question in the interest of national security, only people in the highest levels of government know the answer...
DeleteAnd people from the pub...
Another one bits the dust - great episode on a great topic. I missed all the Legends hate when it first came out, only hearing about it after the fact.
ReplyDeleteWhen I did get around to seeing it, what I didn't see was what all the fuss was about - no, everything might not be exactly how we've imagined it in our brains, but it's an anime take on the Halo-verse - and each episode's art style suited the story they were trying to tell.
So there!
Moving on - "Odd One Out" is cool for one line: "How dare they ignore my awesome heroism."
And, of course, because of dinosaurs :-)
I could go into what I felt about each episode, but that will have to wait for another time. I will say that I've always been surprised how anime can so quickly make me feel emotion.
Slow, panning moments on characters with only their eyes twinkling, or small beads of sweat forming - it seems like that shouldn't be able to move me, but the focus on the character seems to be so intense it really has the effect of pulling me in. It amazes me how they have mastered the dramatic pause - in other forms of entertainment it wears off so quick, but (with me at least) is seems anime can have a characters inner turmoil last for five minutes sometimes and it's still gripping.
Watching "Batman: Gotham Knight" or "The Animatrix" had a same effect, and I would love to see "Legends 2" in the future!
Legends 2! Yes please!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite things about "Odd One Out" that I unfortunately forgot to mention on the podcast was how the children kept referring to Spartan 1337 as "Robot".I love this knowing mocking of the series to date. Can't wait to see if 343 can move away from that common misconception about spartans with their promise to explore the humanity of the Chief in future halo titles!
Woo!
err I also liked this episode?
ReplyDeleteerr thanks?
DeleteHey, thanks a lot for the Halo Legends episode guys, I've been looking forward to it for a while.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit surprised that you both liked the Duel so much, maybe I'm a minority in not caring for it too much. Don't get me wrong, I really like the story and the art is awesome, but I don't feel the art "works" if that makes sense. I mean, the visuals are spectacular, but I'm not a fan of the way the watercolours come out as an animated form. Were it not for that, the Package probably would have been near the top of my favourites.
My favourite out of all of them is the Babysitter, and hearing you talk about it actually got me to learn a few things. The big one was the buildings. At first I felt very much the same as you two; why are their ancient human-looking structures on an alien planet. Then, as soon as one of you mentioned Fraknie's quote about the buildings pre-dating even the Covenant, it dawned on me: the ancient human empire (I'm about half way through Primordium right now.) That's one of the things I love about your podcast, between the two of you, you see things that I would have missed.
Again, great job on the most recent show, and I'm really looking forward to you putting out more in the future. I would say that you are my number one Halo podcast.
Spotting things that are missed at first glance is one of my favourite things about this podcast as well. I like getting feedback on each show as i get to look at things differently.
ReplyDeleteYeah the art style of the duel is definitely divisive! Some people love it and some people hate it but isn't that always the way with a creative choice?
It took me a while to take to it but I find the more I watch it the more I like it. I'm not sure of the portrayal of the female Elite in that one though (She was a touch to giggly for me and her mouth looked to human for my taste). But story wise I think it's my favourite of the whole DVD now.
It just adds so much to the fiction for me.
Thanks again for the high praise!
In the book "Halo: Primordium", 343 Guilty Spark more or less hijacks the (currently unnamed) ship he was on. He purges the ship's AI, and sets a course to a (currently unnamed) location. Spark says he wants to find the Librarian, and has a good idea where to find her.
ReplyDeleteDo you think 343 is on the UNSC Infinity? It might also explain why the ship crash's on Requiem.
Just a thought.
Anyways, love the show!
(p.s. stop putting off your spanking from PGCR)
Hmm... didn't I hear this on the latest PGCR! hah.
ReplyDeleteThat is a REALLY compelling theory though! I don't want to go into it to much right now as some guys may not have yet read primordium but I like the way you think dude.
(p.s. We're only putting off the spanking as we think it may REALLY hurt)
